ABOUT
GUMBALLHEAD
THE CAT:
Gumballhead
is a loner- a seemingly indestructible, tough as nails cat,
equal parts Incredible Hulk, Steve McQueen, Charles Bukowski
and Heathclif the cat. In the tradition of Clint Eastwood's
spaghetti
western "Man With No Name", Gumballhead
is a wandering rogue who always finds himself in the midst
of trouble, and who's adversaries always find they've bitten
off more than they can chew. While humorous, Gumballhead is
an action hero, but unlike Sylvester and Tweety, Tom and Jerry
or Itchy and Scratchy, in Gumballhead's world explosions have
impact: glass shatters, bones break and cars blow up.
Some characters never come back to finish a punchline.
Gumballhead is an independent stray cat- the world is his
home. In one episode Gumballhead may be involved in a high
speed motorboat chase down the streets of Venice, in another
fleeing from the CDC across the Midwestern United States,
and in another, battling mummies in Egypt. Sometimes mixed
up with small time hoods, sometimes helping scientists save
the world.
Gumballhead first appeared on
a series of album covers for the underground band Mount Shasta
throughout the 90's, and has since been featured in a number
of self-published mini-comics, T-shirts and as an ongoing
feature in Roctober magazine. Most recently, a full length
Gumballhead comic book was released
to critical acclaim worldwide, accompanied
by a CD soundtrack from the progressive rock band Cheer-Accident.
As
an underground comic character, Gumballhead has received an
incredible amount of notoriety with only a few scant appearances
to date. Gumballhead T-shirts have appeared on television
programs ranging from MTV's The Real World to The Morton Downey
Jr show to Late Night Japanese TV. His image has been bootlegged
on posters in Bologna, Italy and homemade T-shirts have been
spotted as far away as Zagreb and Eastern Europe! In the SKiN
Graft Records Fan Art Gallery, Gumballhead is the character
fans draw and submit most often - and at least two Gumballhead
tattoos are known to exist (soon to be three!).
In
2003, Gumballhead's career took an unexpected turn. Gumballhead's
ugly mug was licensed to Three Floyds brewery, and
the character now has his own 4-Star wheat beer. Gumballhead
Beer is currently distributed on tap and in bottles to 15
states across the country. Gumballhead will be appearing in
six-packs in 2005.
Now cartoonists Rob Syers and Mark Fischer, are at work on
the definitive Gumballhead series, currently being serialized
in the Chicago Reader.
